Key points
- The WA Residential Battery Scheme is now open – offering rebates of up to $1,300 (Synergy) or $3,800 (Horizon Power).
- Eligible households earning under $210,000 can also access a $2,001-$10,000 interest-free loan over 3–10 years.
- To qualify, batteries must be installed by an SAA-accredited installer, use approved products, and be enrolled in an approved Virtual Power Plant (VPP).
- The WA and Federal battery rebates can be combined, delivering up to $5,000-$7,500 in support for a 10 kWh system.
The WA Residential Battery Scheme is now open for applications. Synergy customers can claim $130 per usable kWh (capped at $1,300 for a 10 kWh battery), while Horizon Power customers receive $380 per kWh (capped at $3,800).
Households earning under $210,000 may also access an interest-free loan of $2,001-$10,000, repayable over 3–10 years. Loans and credit checks are handled by Plenti, the scheme’s third-party administrator.
Virtual Power Plant participation is mandatory (major change!)
To qualify for either the rebate or the loan, every battery must be enrolled in an approved Virtual Power Plant (VPP). Accepted options include Synergy Battery Rewards, Horizon Power’s Community Wave and Plico’s VPP, or another product that meets the Government’s value-sharing rules.
Participation ensures your battery can be remotely coordinated to support grid stability, and opting out will void eligibility.
Approved installers & equipment lists now live
Only batteries and inverters that appear on the Synergy or Horizon Power Supported-Solution Lists can be installed under the scheme, and the work must be carried out by an installer accredited with Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA). The current list of accredited vendors is published on Plenti’s website; ask your installer for the specific product and vendor codes before you sign a contract.
How to apply (from 1 July 2025)
- Check you’re eligible (Synergy or Horizon Power customer, property in WA, battery 5–100 kWh, household internet connection).
- Obtain quotes from approved vendors for an approved battery and, if needed, the no-interest loan.
- Choose your preferred vendor & product.
- Vendor lodges the application on your behalf via the WA Government portal.
- If you tick the loan box, Plenti contacts you to finalise credit checks and loan documents.
Owner-occupiers, investors and tenants
Long-term rental properties are eligible provided the landlord gives written consent to install the battery. This creates a new opportunity for investors wanting to lift their property’s energy rating without shouldering the full upfront cost.
Stacking the WA & Federal rebates
Because the State scheme is complementary to the Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, an eligible 10 kWh system installed in Synergy territory can receive up to $5,000 combined support ($1,300 WA rebate + $3,700 Federal discount). Larger batteries continue to attract the Federal rebate (currently up to $372 per kWh, decreasing each year until 2030) even after the WA cap is reached.
Federal rebate refresher (30 % upfront)
The national Cheaper Home Batteries Program, launched 1 July 2025, offers around a 30 % discount on eligible 5-50 kWh batteries. The upfront saving is calculated at $372 per kWh in 2025 and will step down annually. Systems must be on the Clean Energy Council battery list and installed by SAA-accredited technicians – but VPP enrolment is not compulsory under the Federal rules.
