Case Study: Powering an Off-Grid Lifestyle Block in York, WA
This fully off-grid solar system was designed to power a home on a remote 100-acre property near York, WA.
When David and Melissa Welsh decided on solar to power their 100-acre lifestyle property near York, WA, they were “a little bit gunshy” in choosing a provider.
The couple had been relying on a noisy generator as a temporary solution to their power needs – connecting to mains power wasn’t an economically viable option, as connecting remote WA properties to utility grids is often prohibitive.
Installing an off-grid solar power system is more practical in these situations, presenting better value over time and a more reliable source of power. It’s a matter of implementing the right system – which is why finding a reputable provider is essential.
“I used the power of Facebook,” Melissa explains. “Put it out to my network as to who may have gone off-grid, and who they may have used – there were a couple of people who reached out to me and recommended Jason [Statewide Power].”

“We’ve not skimped on anything...we can live very normally with the system” – Melissa Welsh
Finding the right fit
The Welshes were looking for three things:
1. Trust and reliability
Having heard good and bad stories about solar power companies, it was important to David and Melissa to find someone they could trust with the project. They were looking for good recommendations, a strong reputation, and someone who had proven experience.
Statewide Power met their requirements. Not only were they recommended by acquaintances, but Statewide has plenty of experience with big farming and industrial projects as well as cattle stations – all situations where reliable power was essential for off-grid operations.
2. Expertise and clear communication
They looked for someone who “definitely sounds like he knows what he’s talking about”. Statewide Power kept things clear from a technical and practical standpoint, making sure the client understood and was happy with each part of the process.
3. Comprehensive service offering
Having an off-grid solution made sense for the Welshes – but they wanted to make sure it was fit for their use. Their chosen provider needed to be able to help with design, concept and key-start installation of a system built to work for their needs (now and in future).
Consultation and installation
Statewide conducted a power study to scope out the system based on how the design of the house, how the Welshes lived, and the appliances that were intended to be installed once the home had been built. From there, a fixed price quote was provided for the system and the installation was scheduled.
Statewide completed the project both on time and on budget, creating a safe and reliable power system for the home. Even as the plans changed – like the decision to install a large induction oven outside of the original scope – Statewide was still able to deliver an excellent result by staging a few more batteries on the system.
“We’ve not skimped on anything,” says Melissa of the appliances they use in their off-grid home. “We can live very normally with the system.”
Designing systems to be expandable is a crucial part of meeting the energy needs for clients now, and as their lifestyle changes in future. The current system still has room for expansion if the Welshes need it – not that they’ve had any issues at this stage.
“We’ve been in this house for two, nearly three months… We haven’t had any drama,” adds David. “It works fine, meets our needs… So no, I don’t think there’s anything that [we] would change.”

Results
- Power Delivery = 7.5 kW Continuous / 12 kW 30 minutes SINGLE PHASE
- PV Generation Capacity = 14 kW (Stage 1)
- Battery Capacity = 30 kWh
- Integrated Standby Generator = 11 kVA
