Standby and prime power (continuous) Hyundai diesel generators for Australian conditions
Known for affordability, durability, and low-maintenance operation, Hyundai diesel generators produce clean, stable power suitable for sensitive electronics, and are built to handle harsh West Australian environments.
Our range of single-phase (240V) and three-phase (415V) configurations covers a wide spread of applications, from home backup through to mining and industrial use. Free delivery available Australia-wide.
What size generator do I actually need?
A common mistake is sizing to average load rather than peak load. Electric motors on pumps, compressors, air conditioners and irrigation equipment draw significantly more current on startup than when running. A 10 kW continuous load can spike to 25 kW or more at startup. If your generator can’t handle that surge, it will cut out or struggle to recover.
- A typical rural homestead with a pressure pump, fridge, lighting and a few power points generally needs 8–14 kVA as a minimum.
- Add a large air conditioner or electric hot water system and you’re looking at 14–22 kVA.
- Running irrigation pumps, sheds, workshops, cool rooms or grain handling equipment means most generators for farm use need to be in the 22–35 kVA range.

Single Phase vs Three Phase
Most homes and small-to-medium farm setups run on single-phase (240V). Three-phase (415V) is required for larger motors; typically anything above 3–4 kW running on a three-phase motor, including many irrigation pumps, compressors and industrial machinery.
If you’re replacing or supplementing grid power on a property that already has three-phase supply, you’ll want a three-phase generator to match. Statewide Power can advise the best generator for your requirements.
Understanding standby vs prime power
Standby-rated generators are designed for backup use. They start when the grid fails and run until power is restored, typically no more than 200 hours per year. Some Hyundai models in this range, such as the 8 kVA Hyundai DHY8700SE-LRS Diesel Generator, are rated for standby use only and are not suitable for continuous daily operation.
Prime-rated (continuous duty) units are built to run for extended periods as a primary power source. They’re rated at a lower output than their standby equivalent to account for sustained load, and are a great choice of generator for off-grid properties and remote sites..
